What time is it, Eccles?

My laptop will remain on GMT so add 5.5 hours to the time of a post to see what ACTUAL time it is.

Apparently Indian children find it really really really hard to get hang of the idea that time can change - as they don't have any "summer time" (it's just IST all year round), it is a big job to explain "yes I know it's 10 am now, but in the UK (actually they would say just "in UK" as they always seem to forget articles of speech) then it would be 4.30 am. And if it was the summer in UK then it would be 5.30am"

Actually, thinking about it, I'm confused too.

Let's just have GLOBAL STANDARD TIME and just get used to getting up at "2am" and meeting for drinks at "3pm". It's only random what number we use anyway... And it would avoid people MISSING TELECONFERENCES because they weren't sure what time zone the invite was for.

That sounds like carelessness on the part of whoever was creating the teleconference.

A unified timezone exists (UTC, which is basically GMT), but no one actually uses it because it is impractical. It is far easier to change your watch when going between countries than to change your way of thinking. Imagine how confusing and painful it would be to travel from the UK to the USA only to discover that you are no longer supposed to wake up at 8am, but at 4pm.

UTC has been relegated to the timezone of Internet geeks (myself not included) and the miltary.

About dropping articles; my ex-boss Kewal from 10 years ago (now sadly, deceased)sounded totally RP most of the time, except when under stress when he would come over all Indian and start dropping his articles.
